I favour using your smartphones so we can get to work immediately; this helps motivation. Most of you know how to use your phones to shoot video and take photos. If not, in few minutes you can learn. How do we create our Digital Story? Traditionally we used slides with a recorded narration underneath to drive the story along or, put another way, audio sitting underneath images. The way we make Digital Stories today has changed considerably. Video, music, sound effects and amazing graphics or animation find their way into our creations. The digital trailer for my documentary Violette's Playground, which is in preproduction, uses a mix of archives and slides with music to tell the story. Ginny's work, a former student, uses her music as a medium to pay homage to her cousin, Ashley, a talented songwriter, who is no longer with us. |
The Simplicity This is one of the Digital Stories main attraction. I emphasise the easy learning curve which is minimal. An end is easily seen, unlike a documentary, which is more complex. Digital Storytelling is immediate. In a few hours you will have the essence, idea, and by the end of a day's workshop you will have laid your story on a timeline. The aim is not to produce a polished video. It is about the journey and learning a simple yet creative craft. It helps to develop creative writing skills and experimentation. Once you do one, the journey becomes addictive. And we all know, with practise comes perfection! |
